In 1938, my Catalan grandfather was drafted into Spanish civil war. For one year, he experienced the battle between Republicans and Nationalists at first hand. The war lead him from his small Catalan village all over Spain. After arrest, he switched sides and fought against his former comrades.
During this stressful time, his diary became his best friend. As a trained artist, he kept a record of his impressions by drawing and writing.
For 80 years, he kept this book, took care and cherished it. Until the end, he didn’t like talking about this year. When my mother interviewed him, he referred many times to his book: “I could explain to you, but in here you will find everything”. My mother and I set out on a journey based on his notes. By tracing his memories, we travel through Spain, looking for silent wounds, that still exist today.
