The emergence of digital technology at the end of the 20th century meant a real turning point for the archival profession and for the management of documentary and audiovisual heritage: new forms of production, storage, and cataloging profoundly transformed traditional processes. Physical media, which had been central until then, gave way to versatile formats and constantly evolving systems, forcing professionals to rethink methodologies and strategies for long-term retrieval, preservation, and restoration.
In this round table, specialists and professionals from the sector will discuss the challenges and opportunities that this paradigm shift has brought and continues to bring, as well as the role of initiatives such as the Memorimage Festival, which, on its 20th anniversary, reaffirms itself as a key element in the creative reuse and dissemination of collective audiovisual heritage.
This is an essential meeting for understanding how digitization and the emergence of artificial intelligence are redefining the role of archives and archivists in contemporary society, raising some questions on the horizon.
Participants will include Iolanda Ribas, restorer at the Conservation and Restoration Center of the Filmoteca de Catalunya; Mar Llanas, president of the Association of Audiovisual Documentarians of Spain (ADAE); Luca Ricciardi, director of the UnArchive Festival and the Audiovisual Archive of the Workers’ and Democratic Movement (AAMOD); and Milagros Távara, co-founder and programmer of the International Festival of Audiovisual Appropriation (MUTA) in Peru.
